The local tourist authority has not done a good job in providing information on sights and attractions, i.e., we found nothing in print unlike the Visitor's Guides available at many destinations. Got around by the equivalent of tuk tuks, but unlike other places visited, Ayutthaya has a taxi authority that has set the rates at equiv of US $5 per hour. You can negotiate a single trip, but the lowest prices are still relatively high. The city is spread out so getting around can be expensive.

Tuktuk drivers wait at entrance of hotel. Easy to take a roundtrip to major attractions (200Bt/hour + entrance fee).

Do not make our mistake and go to Ayutaya for only two nights directly after arriving in Thailand. We were so jet lagged that we saw nothing except the hotel and the market, and must return with more time to see the ruins. Do not take the train, bus is simply quicker and has more frequent links, especially if you have to travel onwards from Bangkok.

The town is not crowded and many temples to see. There are some small restaurants close by. The station is only 5 minutes away.

Only saw the main temple area, which is definitely worthwhile.

We transfered from BKK airport to Ayutthaya (~45 min by taxi) to start this visit to Thailand and spent the first day in Ayutthaya which is much easier to adjust to than Bangkok itself. The ruins and museum are extremely interesting and well worth the visit. You can catch an air-con bus or air-con train to Bangkok.

We spent an evening and a day in Ayutthaya, Thailand. It was a very nice town to visit. Many of the sites are in ruins, which was very intriguing for me to walk around. We hired tuk-tuk drivers at 200 bahts per hour to take us around to the different sites.... sometimes the tuk-tuk drivers were able to speak well-enough English they could act like a tour guide, providing historical information.

There was an elephant corral where you could take a ride on an elephant, that looked like fun, but we were running out of time. A very nice town to visit... we only stayed a day, because our tour guide book said you could see everything in a day... but I think it would've been nice to stay for two days and take it easy in this town.
