Stayed at Riga - Riga, Latvia.

Riga is best seen on warm sunny days not in damp, cold winter. Trams are excellent but avoid the taxis at the hotel which are tourist rip-offs (I was charged 13 Lats for a 10 minute ride to the airport - more than twice the official fare)

When you go to Riga make sure You see Blackhead's house, The Dome, and don't forget to have a meal at one of Lido restaurants (for example Vermanitis, Dzirnavas). You won't be disappointed!

Riga is a very small town, a few times we took a taxi which was abolutely not necessary because distances are very short. We appreciated the bus tour through the town because we also visited places we would otherwise not have seen (on the other side of the river Daugava), the view from the rooftop restaurant of Hotel Latvia, the Latvian type of fast food self service restaurants with lots of fish dishes (e.g. LIDO), a visit to the opera house, the Christmas market and the bars in the evening (rather cheap).

Riga is a very friendly city - whatever you come for business or as tourist.
You sure get value for your money here. Recommended to try the Lido (Krasta) restaurant (5 min. out of center with taxi = US$8) - all Latvian and international food in old Latvian surroundings.

Latvia is a hidden treasure. It is just as beautiful as cities like Salzburg, but much more extensive. There is a huge amount of restoration going on to fix the damage done by the Russians.
Eating can be extremely cheap - the Lido chain of restaurants have meals for only 1-2 Lats per person (Only AUD$3-6). There are great tours available - walking tours around Old Riga and country tours to castles in places like Sigulda and Cesis - I was so surprised to find the historical buildings there.
I can't wait to go back.

The hotel is surrounded by a beautiful scene of Riga. In fact we visited a few buildings due to our architecture interest.
